The Production Supervisor is responsible for coordinating the daily activities of Team Members engaged in production. Responsibilities include:
Core Responsibilities1. Shift Handoff & Operational Continuity
- Lead structured handoff from 1st shift → 2nd shift
- Review production status, downtime, quality issues, and incomplete work
- Document and communicate:
- Open items
- Equipment concerns
- Material shortages
- Establish clear expectations for:
- Remaining production goals
- Next-day readiness priorities
- Prepare and deliver next-day handoff summary for 1st shift leadership
2. Next-Day Setup & Production Readiness (Primary Focus)
- Ensure all production lines are fully staged and ready for immediate startup
- Verify:
- Materials staged (cans, lids, ingredients, packaging)
- Work orders printed and accurate
- Correct SKUs and lot tracking prepared
- Pre-configure equipment where possible:
- Line setup alignment
- Changeover completion
- Identify and resolve gaps that could delay next-day startup
3. GMP Cleanliness & Facility Reset
- Own end-of-day sanitation and organization standards
- Ensure:
- Lines are cleaned to GMP/SQF standards
- Floors, drains, and work areas are cleared and sanitized
- Tools and materials are properly stored
- Enforce:
- PPE compliance
- Hygiene standards (handwashing, gloves, etc.)
- Maintain audit-ready conditions at all times
4. Preventative Maintenance (PM) Coordination
- Coordinate with Maintenance to:
- Execute scheduled PM activities during downtime windows
- Prioritize high-impact equipment (filler, seamer, pasteurizer)
- Verify PM completion and documentation
- Identify recurring issues and escalate for resolution
- Support basic troubleshooting and ensure equipment is left in optimal condition for next-day use
5. Quality Oversight (End-of-Run & In-Process)
- Ensure final production output meets:
- Customer specifications
- Internal quality standards
- Verify:
- Fill levels, seams/caps, labeling accuracy
- Lot codes and traceability
- Review and close out:
- In-process quality checks
- Deviations and NCMs
- Partner with QA to ensure compliance and documentation integrity
6. Team Leadership & Performance Management
- Supervise and direct Team Members across:
- Production lines
- Packaging
- Material handling
- Assign labor effectively based on:
- Remaining production needs
- Cleanup and staging priorities
- Provide:
- Real-time coaching
- Performance feedback
- Monitor:
- Attendance, breaks, and timekeeping compliance
- Enforce safety, GMP, and operational standards
7. Documentation & Traceability
- Ensure accurate completion of:
- Work orders
- Batch records
- Pack logs
- Lot tracking and labels
- Review all documentation for:
- Accuracy
- Completeness
- Audit readiness
- Submit:
- Scrap/NCM reports
- Production summaries
- Ensure all records are properly stored and accessible
8. Production Execution & Close-Out
- Complete remaining production safely and efficiently
- Minimize downtime and ensure proper shutdown procedures
- Confirm:
- Finished goods are properly palletized and labeled
- Materials are accounted for and stored correctly
- Transition facility from “production mode” to “ready state” for next day
Key Success Metrics
- On-time next-day startup (zero delays)
- GMP audit readiness at end of shift
- Reduction in equipment downtime (via PM execution)
- Accuracy of documentation and traceability
- Labor efficiency and shift productivity
Required Qualifications
- 3–5 years in food/beverage manufacturing
- 1–2 years in a supervisory or lead capacity
- Strong understanding of:
- GMP, HACCP, SQF environments
- Experience with:
- Filling lines (canning/bottling)
- Packaging operations
- Preventative maintenance coordination
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
