DEL MAR UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: DEAFBLIND INTERVENER
BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Director of Special Education and Student Supports, the District Program Specialist, and site administration, the Intervener provides specialized instructional and communication support to a student or students who have both hearing and vision impairments. The Intervener facilitates access to the educational environment, instructional materials, and social interactions by utilizing individualized communication methods, environmental adaptations, and sensory supports. The Intervener works collaboratively with certificated staff, related service providers, and families to promote the students’ independence, learning, and inclusion in all educational settings.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
· Support the development and implementation of individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with dual sensory impairments, ensuring access to instruction and communication consistent with the student’s unique needs.
· Implement instructional and communication strategies as directed by teachers, specialists, and service providers.
· Facilitate the student’s access to visual and auditory information using tactile, visual, and auditory adaptations, such as sign language, tactile sign, object symbols, and assistive technology.
· Anticipate and describe environmental events, social interactions, and activities to promote comprehension and participation.
· Support the students’ self-advocacy and communication by promoting consistent use of individualized communication systems.
· Assist in creating and maintaining an environment that maximizes the student’s safety, independence, and sensory awareness.
· Provide one-on-one or small-group support during classroom instruction, transitions, and community-based activities.
· Modify and adapt materials as needed under the direction of the classroom teacher and specialists.
· Collaborate with educational teams to develop strategies that foster sensory integration, mobility, and self-help skills.
· Maintain detailed data and documentation on student progress, communication methods, and responses to interventions.
· Participate in training related to deafblindness, communication systems, and sensory accessibility strategies.
· Perform related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to graduation from high school; completion of an Intervener Training Program or willingness to complete one upon employment; and experience working with students who have sensory impairments desired.

· Principles, techniques, and best practices for supporting students with dual sensory impairments.
· Communication systems used with deafblind individuals, including tactile signs, object symbols, and picture communication systems.
· Educational, behavioral, and developmental characteristics of students with sensory and multiple disabilities.
· Basic child development and instructional support techniques.
· Safety practices and emergency procedures related to student supervision.
· Use of assistive technology, adaptive equipment, and instructional materials designed for sensory access.
ABILITY TO:
· Establish and maintain a trusting, supportive relationship with the assigned student.
· Implement individualized communication and instructional strategies under supervision.
· Interpret and convey environmental and social information in accessible ways.
· Work collaboratively with teachers, related service providers, and families.
· Demonstrate patience, empathy, and professionalism when responding to student needs.
· Maintain accurate documentation and confidentiality of student records.
· Communicate effectively using oral, written, and sign-based communication systems as appropriate.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Criminal Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance, Physical and TB Clearance.
SALARY:
Placement on the Classified Salary Schedule Range 23
