Job Summary
The successful candidate for a Mechanical Systems Engineer Lead role will be able to work independently, solve complex technical problems with minimal supervision, effectively lead others as a work performer and a coach, and place emphasis on rapid continual professional development of engineers to handle a breadth of tasks for plant operations. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others and manage multiple projects simultaneously, effectively plan, organize, and direct the work of teams consisting of multiple stakeholders to conduct comprehensive verification efforts and successfully execute problem resolution when required.
It is expected that a Mechanical Systems Engineer Lead will maintain the skills required to perform the general job duties of a Mechanical Systems Engineer in maintaining and sustaining plant equipment.
Job Duties:
- Systems Engineering & Execution
- Act at the Lead Systems Engineer for mechanical plant equipment, directing planning and execution activities (estimates, hazard analysis, support SOC development, plant for future issues/foresee problems and resolve) for plant equipment. Ensure SSHA’s, work instructions, and configuration management remain current while supporting individual technical tasks.
- Team Coordination & Mentoring
- Oversee daily assignments for engineering personnel and allocate staff for systems coverage ensuring systems are ready for reliable operation to support testing. Serve as technical mentor, support crew training, and provide constructive input for team performance reviews.
- Operations & Project Tracking
- Monitor task performance across technical, schedule, and cost metrics. Assist with labor forecasting, provide status briefings to management, and perform basic administrative duties as requested.
- Stakeholder Collaboration
- Interface with AF customer, cross-disciplinary teams (Electrical Systems Lead, ID&C Lead, Staff Engineers, Senior Staff Engineers, Engineering Advisory Board, etc), and management to translate customer requirements into successful solutions. Participate in assigned technical committees or studies.
- Safety & Quality Assurance
- Champion the company’s safety covenant by auditing progress, enforcing safety standards and best practices, and consistently utilizing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Performs other related duties as required
Basic Qualifications
- Grade 07: Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university plus a minimum of 3 years’ progressive and relevant experience in an engineering team environment
- Grade 08: Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university plus a minimum of 5 years’ progressive and relevant experience in an engineering team environment
- Experience as a Mechanical Systems Engineer or Test Operations Engineer with systems responsibilities at AEDC
- Current U.S. Citizenship is required
Preferred Qualifications
- A minimum of 4 years experience responsible for systems maintenance, sustainment and operations
- Currently serving as an effective mentor to one or more individuals
- Exhibits strong level of technical curiosity and desire to seek understanding
- Strong interpersonal skills, strong written and oral communications skills, and confidence leading small teams.
- Professional Engineer’s License or a Master of Science degree or post-graduate coursework in Mechanical engineering from an accredited engineering program
- Active Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance
