ResponsibilitiesThe Future Leaders Director of Nursing in Training (DONIT) plays acritical role in developing the next generation of clinical leaders within Genesis skilled nursingfacilities. This role is designed to build the clinical, regulatory, operational, and leadershipcompetencies required to successfully lead nursing services and ensure the highest standards ofresident care, safety, and compliance.The Future Leader DONIT role is automatically enrolled in Genesis’ Future Leaders Program, astructured development pathway that includes curriculum-based learning, hands-on facilityexperience, executive mentorship, and completion of a clinical capstone project, with programlength tailored based on individual experience and progression.
Compliance with Licensure and Program Requirements Complete all required training hours, structured curriculum, and experiential learningactivities within the Director of Nursing in Training (DONIT) program. Ensure clinical oversight by an approved Director of Nursing Preceptor throughout theduration of the program. Maintain accurate documentation of training activities, evaluations, and progress reportsin accordance with Future Leader Program standards. May serve in a center-based leadership role for a defined period, such as Unit Manager orAssistant Director of Nursing (ADON), based on prior experience and developmentalneeds, to build practical leadership skills and support day-to-day clinical operations. Includes exposure to additional centers within a geographical POD to broadenoperational perspective, strengthen collaboration, and gain insight into varying leadershipstyles, clinical practices, and performance outcomes.
Clinical Leadership Development Develop comprehensive knowledge of nursing services management in a skilled nursingenvironment.
- Build competency in clinical decision-making, delegation, staff accountability, andpatient safety leadership. Demonstrate leadership behaviors that support quality outcomes, regulatory compliance,and a culture of excellence.
Rotational Training Across Core Clinical and Operational AreasParticipate in structured rotations to gain exposure to all key clinical and interdisciplinaryfunctions, including but not limited to: Nursing Services, including infection prevention and staff development MDS and Clinical Reimbursement Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) Risk Management and Incident Investigation Survey Readiness and Regulatory Compliance Medical Services and Physician Collaboration Rehabilitation Services Social Services and Care Transitions Admissions and Clinical Intake Staffing, Scheduling, and Workforce Management Environmental Services and Life Safety Collaboration Pharmacy Services and Medication Management Other areas as required by program design
Weekly Coaching and Development Planning Participate in structured weekly one-on-one coaching sessions with the DONITPreceptor. Review progress toward curriculum milestones, leadership competencies, and clinicalreadiness. Align weekly activities with program deliverables, quality priorities, and center goals.
Project-Based Learning and Clinical Impact Complete a Capstone Project during the program that delivers measurableimprovements in clinical quality, regulatory readiness, staff development, or residentoutcomes. Support center and POD-level clinical initiatives and performance improvement efforts. Present capstone outcomes and lessons learned to organization and program leadership.
Leadership Development and Interdisciplinary Integration Attend leadership meetings, clinical councils, and training sessions alongside thePreceptor and Future Leaders Program Director. Participate in interdisciplinary task groups and clinical strategy initiatives. Build competency in communication, systems thinking, staff engagement, and changeleadership.
Regulatory and Compliance Acumen Gain comprehensive understanding of CMS regulations, Conditions of Participation, statenursing requirements, HIPAA, OSHA, and other applicable regulatory frameworks. Demonstrate knowledge of survey processes, deficiency management, and correctiveaction planning. Uphold ethical standards, personnel policies, and Genesis compliance expectations.
Certification Requirement Director of Nursing Services 64Certified (DNS-CT) credential through the AmericanAssociation of Post-Acute Care Nursing (AAPACN) or similar certification isrequired. Certification must be obtained during the DONIT program or within a definedtimeframe established by the Future Leaders Program. Active participation in AAPACN coursework, preparation, and exam completion isexpected as part of program requirements.
Self-Assessment, Feedback, and Mentorship Complete ongoing self-assessments related to clinical leadership, regulatory readiness,and operational effectiveness. Engage in continuous feedback with the Preceptor, Administrator, and interdisciplinaryleadership team. Participate in formal mentorship and coaching check-ins with regional and nationalclinical leaders.
Demonstrated Readiness for Director of Nursing Role By program completion, demonstrate readiness to independently lead nursing services ina Genesis skilled nursing center. Exhibit mastery in clinical operations, workforce leadership, compliance, qualityimprovement, and resident safety.
11. Completion of Future Leaders DONIT Program Successfully complete all six months of curriculum, rotations, and assigned FutureLeader Program requirements. Complete and present a Capstone Project that delivers measurable value to the center. Meet all established benchmarks and performance expectations through ongoing and finalevaluations.
Qualifications
1. The Director of Nursing in Training must be a graduate of an accredited School ofNursing,college or university with current registered nurse licensure by the State Boardof Nursing.
2. A BSN is preferred for this position. If the candidate does not currently have a BSN, pursuit ofthe degree within a reasonable period of time is strongly encouraged.
