Salary Range: $80,000-$85,000
Position Description The George Polk School of Communication at Long Island University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Journalism. The position may be filled as tenure-track or non-tenure track (NTTA), depending on qualifications and candidate interest. We seek a dynamic teacher-scholar or industry professional committed to preparing students for success in today's rapidly evolving media environment.
The successful candidate will contribute to a forward-looking program that embraces the legacy of George Polk and LIU's distinguished tradition in investigative and public interest journalism, while also integrating contemporary practices in digital, multimedia, and data-driven reporting.
Responsibilities
• Teach undergraduate courses in journalism, including but not limited to: news writing and reporting, multimedia journalism, investigative reporting, ethics, media law, and emerging media platforms.
• Advise and mentor students, fostering their academic and professional development.
• Maintain an active record of scholarship, creative work, or professional engagement in the field of journalism.
• Collaborate with faculty across the George Polk School of Communication in curriculum development, program initiatives, and community partnerships.
• Participate in departmental, school, and University service, including committee work and student recruitment efforts.
Qualifications
• Terminal degree in journalism, communications, or a related field preferred (Ph.D. or M.F.A.); a master's degree with significant professional experience will be considered.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the University level (for tenure-track consideration) or significant professional journalism experience (for NTTA consideration).
• Evidence of ongoing scholarly, creative, or professional achievement in journalism.
• Strong commitment to student success, experiential learning, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Ability to teach across traditional and digital platforms and to engage with emerging technologies in journalism.
