Role Overview
The Lab Manager is the high-level orchestrator of facility operations, productivity, and physical standards. This role focuses on the oversight of departmental managers to ensure that production targets are met, the building is maintained, and all internal data matches physical inventory perfectly. While a dedicated Compliance/METRC lead will handle data entry, the Lab Manager is ultimately accountable for ensuring those systems are fed accurate, real-time information from the floor.
Core Responsibilities
1. Departmental Oversight & Process Knowledge
The Lab Manager provides high-level leadership to the individual Managers of each product line. You must have a solid foundational understanding of these processes to verify that Department Leads are operating efficiently:
- Solventless: Oversight of ice water extraction, freeze-drying, and rosin pressing.
- Kitchen/Infusions: Oversight of infusion math, homogenization, and food-safety standards.
- Accountability: Ensure Department Leads are meeting daily throughput quotas and maintaining their specific zones.
2. Inventory Integrity & Data Verification
- Live-Time Tracking Oversight: Ensure all Department Leads are communicating weights and movements to the Compliance/METRC team in real-time (no end-of-day data dumping).
- Physical Audits: Conduct daily walkthroughs to verify that physical inventory (Raw, WIP, Finished Goods) matches internal tracking sheets.
- Discrepancy Investigation: Lead the investigation into any weight variances or missing inventory across all departments.
3. Personnel Management & Productivity
- Performance Metrics: Monitor and measure the productivity of each department; identify labor inefficiencies and implement solutions.
- Staffing & Scheduling: Manage the master schedule for all lab technicians and department leads to ensure 100% operational coverage.
- Culture & Safety: Enforce OSHA standards and company safety protocols across the entire facility.
4. Facility Maintenance & Sanitation
- Building Stewardship: Ensure the overall physical building is in good repair. Conduct daily walkthroughs to identify maintenance needs (leaks, electrical, HVAC).
- Sanitation Standards: Enforce medical-grade cleanliness. Ensure the lab, breakrooms, and storage areas are "audit-ready" at all times.
- Equipment Care: Oversee the preventative maintenance schedules for all extraction and processing hardware to prevent downtime.
5. Security & Environment Monitoring
- Hardware Checks: Conduct daily morning checks of all security cameras, access control points, and environmental sensors (temp/humidity).
- Immediate Reporting: Report any hardware failures or security breaches to the Managing Director within 15 minutes of discovery.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Inventory Accuracy: 100% match between physical weight and internal records at the end of every shift.
- Productivity: Lab must hit >95% of daily production quotas across all product departments.
- Data Flow: Ensure 0% "data lag"—all floor movements must be reported to the Compliance lead within 15 minutes.
- Facility Standard: 100% Sanitation. Pass all internal "white-glove" cleanliness checks daily.
- Communication Speed: Any major discrepancy, equipment failure, or facility issue must be reported to the Managing Director within 15 minutes.
- Maintenance Uptime: Zero production stoppages due to neglected routine maintenance or cleaning.
Success in This Role Looks Like
- The "Audit-Ready" Facility: The building is pristine, the staff is productive, and the physical jars on the shelf match the records perfectly.
- Empowered Leads: The Managers of Solventless, BHO, Distillate, and Kitchen have clear targets and the resources they need to hit them.
- Seamless Data Flow: You have bridged the gap between the "lab floor" and "compliance desk" so that information moves accurately and instantly.
- Proactive Ownership: The Managing Director never has to ask about a leak, a broken camera, or a missed quota—you’ve already identified it and have a plan to fix it.
