Street Level Cycles (SLC) Retail Training Manager
Position Status: Full-time, non-exempt
Schedule: Approximately 37.5 hours/week, Tuesday–Saturday
Compensation: $30-32/hour, depending on relevant experience and qualifications
Summary: Street Level Cycles is a popular used bicycle shop and youth job training program operated by Waterside Workshops, a nonprofit organization in the Berkeley Aquatic Park.
Mission: Waterside Workshops engages youth and the community through hands-on learning in bicycle mechanics, wooden boatbuilding, and outdoor education. Waterside is a safe place for youth to feel heard, gain confidence, develop work skills, and access the tools and resources needed to lead healthy, sustainable lives.
The Retail Training Manager leads Street Level Cycles' retail and service operations as a sustainable social enterprise and a hands-on youth workforce development program. The Manager is responsible for customer experience, retail and repair revenue, bicycle production and inventory systems - integrating youth employees and interns into the day-to-day operation of the shop. Success in this role means building effective systems, developing young people, maintaining high standards for bicycle safety and customer service, and meeting the earned-revenue goals that support SLC's programs.
Key Responsibilities:
Youth Development
Supervise youth staff and interns assigned to retail operations
Train and educate youth staff and interns in sales, customer service, and operations
Collaborate with Assistant Program Director to integrate youth job training topics
Collaborate on cross-program events and youth trips
Retail and Service Operations
Manage used bicycle and accessory sales
Provide and manage repair services in collaboration with the coordinator
Oversee service work orders, POS operations, and inventories
Support inventory ordering, purchasing, stocking, and receiving
Maintain excellent customer service and compliance with bicycle industry safety standards
Track revenue and monthly goals as well as identify growth opportunities
Implement sales promotions and marketing communications in store and on social media
Receiving and Production Operations
Supervise refurbishment of used bicycles following industry safety standards to support retail operations
Maintain sustainable recycling and reuse systems
Ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials and e-waste including taking trips to off-site disposal sites
Support bicycle donation receiving and processing including off-site pick ups
Community Impact
Facilitate and track bicycle donations to community members
Track waste diversion metrics and other community impact data
Support Community Open Shop when necessary
Required Competencies:
Demonstrated experience in customer facing retail and/or repair service
Demonstrated experience managing and/or training staff or youth
Advanced mechanic skills with the ability to repair both old and new bicycles per bicycle industry standards
Excellent communication, patience, and interpersonal skills
Excellent organization, time management, and multitasking abilities
Ability to teach, mentor, and integrate youth interns into all aspects of managing operations, service, and retail
Preferred Experience:
5+ years of relevant bicycle retail/service, customer-service, or operations experience
3+ years of supervisory, training, or youth-development experience
Experience in youth development, education, workforce development, or nonprofit organizations
Physical Requirements:
This position regularly involves working in a repair shop environment, including operating hand tools, moving bicycles and parts, using a computer and point-of-sale system, and periods of standing and moving throughout the shop. The position requires the ability to move or lift items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
