DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Custodian/ Maintenance worker is responsible for ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and functionality of the facility. This position involves performing a variety of maintenance and minor repair tasks to keep the premises in optimal condition. Adequate performance at this level requires initiative and a general understanding of safety rules and regulations, compliance requirements of the United States and California Occupational Safety and Health Acts, and the procedures of the department. This position assists the Facilities Director to ensure the San Jose Headquarters is properly maintained and cleaned. This position is highly visible, and works closely with department managers, employees, vendors, contractors, and sub-contractors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Responsibilities and duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Performs minor repairs to plumbing, office equipment, and furnishings
Assists in moving and arranging furniture for meetings and CSEA events
Reports and addresses safety, sanitary, and fire hazards
Receives or picks up supplies and equipment
Installs bulletin boards, pictures, etc. as requested
Replaces fluorescent lights/ballasts and performs minor maintenance tasks (e.g., repairing window latches and door hinges)
Changes/repairs electrical cords, fixtures
Maintains and replaces ceiling tiles
Strips and waxes floors
Vacuums, steam cleans, and shampoos mats, rugs, and carpets on a regular cadence
Washes, scrubs, and disinfects restrooms
Sweeps, cleans, scrubs, and/or power washes outdoor areas
Cleans and dusts walls, air conditioning vents, furniture, woodwork, and other equipment
Cleans windows, door glass, and drinking fountains
Cleans upholstered furniture
Removes trash
Locks building at night
May be requested to assist the Director, Facilities and Real Estate Services, or Office Services Supervisors
May be asked to provide manual support at the annual CSEA conference
May assist and/or relieve the Office Systems Operator I in assigned duties (contract provision 13.3.2 of the collective bargaining agreement shall not be violated)
Performs other related tasks as required by the Director, Facilities and Real Estate Services, or Office Services Supervisors
KNOWLEDGE OF
Operations, methods, materials, equipment, and terms used in custodial work
Materials, tools, and methods used in general maintenance work
Light maintenance plumbing, electrical, and equipment and furniture repair tasks
Mechanical aptitude
Various cleaning materials and equipment.
ABILITY TO
Perform skillfully a variety of custodial and minor routine maintenance repair work to include minor electrical and plumbing work, office furniture and equipment
Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency
Use mechanical tools to perform minor repairs and adjustments
Learn safety rules and regulations, compliance requirements of the United States and California Occupational Safety and Health Acts (OSHA), and departmental procedures
Read and interpret equipment and cleaning chemical specifications
Read, write and make arithmetic computations at the level required for successful job performance
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships and meet the public with courtesy and tact
Demonstrate initiative, good judgment and proper safety precautions
Understand and follow oral and written directions
Engage in sustained and heavy physical activity
Analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action
Lift and carry 50 pounds, may be asked to lift 75 pounds occasionally
Climb ladders
Be bonded.
REQUIREMENTS & EXPERIENCE
Sufficient to assure the ability to read, write and speak English at the level required for an efficient and successful job performance
One to two years of recent experience in a combination of custodial and general maintenance work
Must possess a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
Must be willing to submit to a medical examination
This position is located at our San Jose Headquarters office and the working hours are 11:30 am to 7:30 pm. CSEA has 12 offices in California with approximately 300 dedicated employees. A complete list of offices and locations is on our website.
