The Religious Education Assistant (REA) is hired to assist leading the program for elementary aged children in the
Lifespan Religious Education program every Sunday, including set-up, and help with special events. The RE Assistant, in consultation with the DLRE, will help to maintain a cooperative, nurturing teaching environment for learning and faith development grounded in Unitarian Universalism for children birth - adolescence. The REA is also jointly responsible for assuring the safety and welfare of all children while they are participating in RE programs
General Description of Position Duties:
Set up for Sunday programming, including for other ages. Assist with special events such as Trunk or Treat, Easter Egg
Hunt. Provide childcare for congregational meetings and other church events, primarily on Sunday afternoons; may be
offered hours on other days.
Description of Duties
Program Assistant Duties
• Set-up and clean-up for Sunday LRE program
• Ensure all necessary supplies are out and ready
• Move tables and chairs to needed configuration
• Ensure chalice is ready with candle and lighter
• Clean and put away supplies
• Disinfect toys, tables and chairs with provided vinegar solution
Clerical Duties
• Take attendance
• Provide registration forms for new families
• Ensure new registrations are entered into UUCS database
• Perform filing and organizing in the LRE office
Support special events and services as scheduled
• Assist with requesting donations for holiday events (Trunk or Treat, Easter Egg Hunt) and
putting on those events
• Staff Parents’ Night Out (6 times per year)
• Provide support on Christmas Eve
Regular Duties
• Meet with DLRE to prepare for Sunday (1-2 hours)
• On Sundays, lead or co-lead LRE session for elementary school
• Learn hymns and songs to teach children
• On Sundays, check in with leaders of preschool and youth group to ensure they have what
they need
• Communication and parent check-ins
• Playground supervision
Childcare Duties
• Provide childcare for congregational meetings and classes on Sunday afternoons
• The RE Assistant may be offered hours to provide childcare when requested for evening
congregational events
Self-Management
• This position is a mandated reporter for child abuse and neglect.
• Responsible for the use of safety protocols to ensure a safe environment for children.
• Responsible for using safe practices and methods in the operation and supplies related to
their job.
• Communicate needs beyond the scope of this position to supervisor.
Describe all on-going working conditions:
This is a religious organization with the employee working in a normal church environment. The job duties require
an employee to bend, reach, and stand for extended periods. The employee must have the ability to lift 30
pounds up to shoulder height.
Describe all required knowledge skills, certificates or licenses:
• Knowledge of, or willingness to become familiar with Unitarian Universalist Religious Education Curricula.
• Training and/or experience working in educational environments with children.
• Ability to work positively with the Director of Lifespan Religious Education, church administration, staff,
the Board and volunteers in the Religious Education Program
• Ability to demonstrate rapport, flexibility, creativity, and effectiveness guiding child group activities
• Basic computer skills, including MS Word and Excel and Google Suite
• Adult, Child & Infant CPR/first aid and Food Handlers’ certification – have or be willing to obtain within 30
days of hire
• Ability to pass a background check upon hire and every two years thereafter
• Approval in the Central Background Registry, including fingerprinting, currently or within 30 days of hire.
• Participate in annual safety trainings
Describe supervision received and the performance review process:
The person in this position reports to and is supervised by the Director of Lifespan Religious Education and may
receive direction from the UUCS Minister. Written performance appraisal reviews and goal-setting will occur
annually with the Minister. Input for reviews may be sought from other staff and key lay leaders.

Budgetary Authority of the Job Position::
The RE Assistant has no budgetary authority. The RE Assistant is responsible for alerting the DLRE when supplies
are needed.
Contractual Authority of the Job Position:
The person in this position is not authorized by the UUCS Board of Directors to negotiate and/or sign on behalf of
UUCS with regards to contracts.
