Revel Pharmaceuticals is reimagining how enzymes can be used as therapeutics by developing repair-based approaches to aging – a disease that affects everyone. We are applying our proprietary enzyme discovery and engineering platform to develop novel treatments for patients suffering from aging-associated conditions. Our enzymes will extend human healthspan by repairing damage that accumulates as we age. Revel intends to create a revolution in the development of therapeutic enzymes, and we would like your help.
Revel is backed by top investors in the longevity space. Our laboratory and office space is located in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco – an emerging hub of the next generation of biotechnology unicorns – and features beautiful views of San Francisco Bay. The vibrant neighborhood features parks, trendy restaurants, brunch cafes, breweries, and a climbing gym, all within a short walk from our headquarters.
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated, creative, and self-driven Research Associate or Associate Scientist to join our Enzyme Engineering Team. As an early hire reporting to a Research Scientist, you will take full ownership of our mammalian cell culture program and play a central role in advancing our enzyme discovery and engineering campaigns. You will work alongside world-class scientists at the cutting edge of protein engineering and therapeutic enzyme development.
Core Responsibilities
- Mammalian Cell Culture: Own and operate our mammalian tissue culture (TC) program, including routine passaging, maintenance, and quality control of human hepatocyte and HEK cell lines.
- Stable Cell Line Generation: Design and execute stable genomic integration workflows to generate and validate engineered cell lines for ongoing research programs.
- Transfection & Expression: Transfect plasmid constructs into mammalian cell lines and assess expression to evaluate and optimize novel constructs.
- Assay Development: Plan and execute enzyme assays and substrate profiling to characterize novel activities.
- Laboratory Robotics: Optional exposure to operate laboratory robotics to scale our discovery and engineering campaigns.
- Data & Communication: Meticulously record experimental data and communicate results to the broader scientific team.
Required Experience and Skills
- Education: Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, or a related discipline; or a B.S./M.S. with 3+ years of hands-on mammalian tissue culture (TC) experience.
- Cell Culture Expertise: Demonstrated proficiency across multiple mammalian cell line types, with a strong ability to troubleshoot and resolve TC issues independently.
- Stable Line Generation: Proven experience creating stable integrant cell lines.
- Transfection: Experience transfecting plasmid constructs and evaluating expression in mammalian systems.
- Technical Proficiency: Hands-on experience with core molecular biology techniques.
- Reliability: You are the person who "gets things done." You are proactive, detail-oriented, and enjoy creating order out of chaos.
- Adaptability: Comfortable in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial setting where priorities can shift quickly.
- Bonus Points: Experience with hepatocyte-specific culture systems, enzymology, directed evolution, or laboratory automation/robotics.
