Midlands Technical College is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Computer Operator I (Information Technology Supervisor I) to support the daily operations of its information technology infrastructure. This role is essential in ensuring the reliable performance, monitoring, and maintenance of enterprise computer systems and related equipment that support the college’s academic and administrative functions. The Computer Operator I is responsible for overseeing system operations during assigned shifts, including monitoring system performance, managing job processing, and responding to system alerts or failures in a timely manner. This position plays a key role in maintaining system uptime and data integrity by following established procedures, executing command functions, and coordinating with internal IT teams and external vendors when necessary. The role requires the ability to troubleshoot issues, escalate concerns appropriately, and act decisively in emergency situations to minimize disruptions.
In addition to technical responsibilities, this position involves clear and consistent communication through daily shift reports, documentation, and regular updates to leadership. The Computer Operator I collaborates with faculty, staff, and vendors to support technology-related needs while maintaining professionalism and responsiveness. The role also supports ongoing operational improvements by adhering to best practices, contributing to process enhancements, and ensuring compliance with institutional standards.
This position is primarily based at the Beltline Campus but may require occasional support at other college locations. Flexibility is essential, as the role may include extended hours, shift coverage, and on-call responsibilities to ensure continuous system operations. The Computer Operator I is a vital contributor to the college’s mission, helping to maintain a stable and efficient technology environment that supports student success and institutional effectiveness.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
A high school diploma and experience in the operation of mainframe / enterprise computers and accessories.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating and monitoring enterprise-level computer systems, including mainframe or server environments
- Familiarity with job scheduling software, system monitoring tools, and command-line interfaces
- Working knowledge of operating systems such as Windows Server, Linux, or similar platforms
- Experience supporting peripheral equipment such as printers, storage devices, and backup systems
- Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and respond effectively to system alerts or outages
- Prior experience in a higher education or large organizational IT environment
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a shift-based setting
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and professionally with technical and non-technical users
- Experience documenting processes, maintaining logs, and preparing operational reports
- Commitment to providing excellent customer service and maintaining a high level of reliability and accountability
