Salem Hospital, a member of Mass General Brigham, is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Palliative Care Physician to join our growing, interdisciplinary Palliative Care team. The ideal candidate will provide expert clinical care for patients with serious and complex illnesses, offer guidance on goals of care, help support patients and families through end-of-life decision-making, and contribute to advancing high-quality, person-centered palliative care across the hospital.
The Palliative Care Physician will provide clinical leadership within the Palliative Care Services team, collaborating closely with hospitalists, specialists, primary care physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff to enhance care delivery throughout the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Collaboration
- Provide clinical leadership and expertise within the Palliative Care Services team to improve care for patients with complex and life-limiting illnesses throughout the hospital.
- Build strong, collaborative relationships with referring physicians and interdisciplinary colleagues to ensure excellent follow-up on consultations and promote a culture of coordinated patient-centered care.
Patient Care & Consultation
- Provide inpatient palliative care consultation focused on symptom management, supportive care, and complex medical decision-making.
- Address general medical needs not otherwise met by the attending physician within the scope of palliative care practice.
- Facilitate clarification of patient and family goals of care, ensuring care plans align with patient values and preferences.
- Facilitate access to appropriate support models, including community-based services and specialty programs.
- Provide second opinions regarding hospice eligibility and collaborate with the Hospice Medical Director to support official hospice certification when appropriate.
Team Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise clinical activities of the palliative care Nurse Practitioner, house officer trainees, and other clinical and nonclinical staff associated with the palliative care program.
- Consult with the attending physician and the interdisciplinary team to establish and review written plans of care at intervals defined within the care plan.
Program Development & Education
- Participate in the development and refinement of standards of care for the Palliative Care Services program.
- Provide education, mentorship, and training to hospital staff and colleagues to enhance palliative care competency across the organization.
- Support ongoing quality improvement efforts and contribute to program growth and operational planning.
Additional Duties
- Perform other duties as requested to support the mission of Salem Hospital and Mass General Brigham in delivering exceptional, compassionate care.
Qualifications
- M.D. or D.O. degree with board certification or board eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
- Licensed or eligible for medical licensure in Massachusetts.
- Demonstrated commitment to palliative care principles, interdisciplinary practice, and patient- and family-centered care.
- Strong communication, teaching, and collaboration skills.
