About The Role
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Information Technology Division (ITD) is seeking a
Senior Systems Engineer with GIS experience to provide expert-level systems administration and technical support. The role focuses on Windows Server management, ArcGIS systems, and infrastructure optimization for high-availability environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer Windows Server 2008/2012/2016/2019 environments, including Active Directory, Group Policies, Firewall Configuration, and SSL Certificate management
- Manage and optimize network components such as firewalls, NAT rules, load balancing, and IP configurations
- Support ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Workflow Manager Server (v10.5.1–10.9.1+), and Portal for ArcGIS environments
- Install and configure ArcGIS Web Adaptors and manage shared configuration stores
- Manage ArcGIS License Manager, ArcGIS Desktop (ArcCatalog, ArcMap), and deploy GIS-related files (MXD, SD, SDE, AGS, JTC)
- Troubleshoot and optimize IIS and Tomcat environments for ArcGIS Server
- Perform server upgrades, patching, and performance monitoring
- Utilize monitoring tools such as SCCM, SCOM, or Nagios to ensure system uptime and availability
- Provide system architecture support, performance tuning, and troubleshooting for .NET and other VDOT applications
- Lead complex system engineering projects and coordinate with cross-functional teams
- Participate in after-hours and on-call rotations as required
Preferred Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of Windows Server administration and networking fundamentals
- Experience with ArcGIS Enterprise suite (Server, Portal, Workflow Manager, Web Adaptors)
- Familiarity with Python, JSON, and browser developer tools
- Knowledge of web/app server operations, including clustering, failover, and diagnostics
- Hands-on experience with monitoring tools and automation scripting
