II. POSITION SUMMARY:
The supervisor role with the overall responsibility for assigned patient care operations for Good Samaritan Hospital. Under the general direction of the Chief nursing officer/Patient Care Services, the Supervisor is responsible for maintaining staff effectiveness and efficiency in the Intensive Care Unit. The supervisor is responsible for:
- Initiating, guiding, and directing the coordination of services provided by the department.
- Functioning as a resource person for staff members and assisting in necessary education to promote effective management of the department.
- Monitoring the overall quality of nurisng care provided in the Intensive Care Unit.
- Making decisions regarding activities in his/her area of responsibility, in collaboration with the CNO/Patient Care Services, based on Hospital Administrative, Human Resources, and Department of Nursing Standards.
III. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ensures that Departmental mission and objectives are achieved. Interpretation of these objectives will be provided to staff, as necessary.
- Guides, directs, and plans the organization and coordination of the Departmental activities, with on-going assessment of the quality and efficiency of these activities. Coordinates the scheduling of the nursing staff to provide for appropriate staffing of nursing units in his/her areas of responsibility.
- Manages the nursing staff in the overall coordination of patient care provided in the Intensive Care Unit.
- Provides continuous performance assessment of nursing staff.
- Assumes responsibility for the administrative and clinical supervision of all nursing personnel in his/her area of responsibility. Demonstrates leadership skills in problem-solving, negotiation, and conflict management to improve teamwork. Protects confidentiality of patients/staff, respecting their dignity, privacy, and differences.
- Assists in the formulation of departmental budgets and monitors adherence to approved budgets in collaboration with the CNO /Patient Care Services.
- Assists in establishing and maintaining communication channels with the Medical Staff, Nursing Administration, and other Hospital Departments.
- Coordinates development and implementation of educational programs to meet specific departmental needs.
- Participates in department's performance improvement activities.
- Participates in cooperative planning with other Hospital Departments as needed.
- Maintains own professional growth through organizational memberships, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education endeavors. Maintains current knowledge of developments and trends in nursing practice.
- Consistently serves as a role model in providing outstanding service to patients, physicians, fellow employees, and guests. Maintains professional level of conduct by demonstrating courteous and positive behaviors.
- Other duties as assigned.

IV. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Current licensure in California as a Registered Nurse.
- Minimum of three years clinical practice with emphasis on ICU experience.
- Current B.L.S. and A.C.L.S. certifications.
V. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Physical Activity: Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light to Medium Work
- Working Hazards or Risks - routine hazards and risks involved in performing nursing activates, including potential exposure to infectious processes, potential exposure to hazardous substances, potential musculoskeletal injures.
- OSHA Blood Borne Risk Category I.
