Job Overview
An established mechanical services contractor (HVAC & plumbing) in the greater Philadelphia/South Jersey region is in a growth phase, actively expanding its service division, and looking for a hands-on Controller or CFO to lead financial operations through that growth. This is a leadership-level position for a numbers-driven professional who’s comfortable in a construction/trades environment, understands the financial complexities of project-based work, and is energized by building structure in a company that’s actively scaling. You’ll work closely with ownership and have direct input on financial strategy during a pivotal period.
Key Responsibilities
Construction accounting background is required.
Project Accounting
∙ Prepare and manage AIA-style progress billing (G702/G703 or equivalent)
∙ Maintain work-in-progress (WIP) reporting
∙ Track job costs across active contracts
Payroll & Compliance
∙ Directly process payroll for field and office staff
∙ Handle federal/state payroll tax filings
∙ Maintain compliance with wage and labor regulations
Cash & Banking
∙ Manage monthly reconciliations
∙ Own cash flow forecasting
∙ Maintain banking relationships
AR/AP Management
∙ Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable functions
∙ Monitor aging reports and collections
∙ Approve vendor payments
Reporting & Strategy
∙ Deliver monthly financials, variance reports, and KPI tracking
∙ Work directly with ownership on budgeting, forecasting, and growth planning
Qualifications
∙ 5+ years of hands-on construction accounting experience required — mechanical contracting, HVAC/plumbing, or closely related trades industry
∙ Direct, hands-on experience preparing progress billing and managing WIP schedules is required, not just familiarity
∙ Comfortable with construction accounting platforms (Sage, Viewpoint etc.) and payroll systems
∙ Solid grasp of payroll tax compliance at all levels
∙ Experience leading AR/AP staff
∙ Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
∙ CPA/CMA a plus, not required

∙ $140K–$180K, commensurate with experience
