The Usher is the first character we see in the film, who welcomes us to partake in the life story of Jacob. He occasionally reappears throughout the film to watch over Jacob in important moments.
The Driver is someone the main character has a chance positive interaction with, one who encourages Jacob to keep going in the face of adversity.
Jacob's father only appears in the final pages of the story, where he's able to tell his son he's proud of him. Having died at a young age, Jacob has grown up without his father being there, but in each of these three minor roles being portrayed by the same actor, we see that the father has still been influencing his son as a specter long after he's gone.
