Position Overview:
This role operates in a produce brokerage and farming environment characterized by seasonal fluctuations, changing market conditions, and high transaction volumes. The Director of Accounting works closely with ownership, the CFO, and cross-functional teams to ensure the organization maintains strong financial discipline while supporting continued operational growth.
In produce and farming operations, success depends on balancing working capital, inventory, and margins in an environment where timing and execution are critical. The Director of Accounting serves as the financial steward of the organization, ensuring accurate reporting, sound controls, and the financial visibility needed to support growth and long-term success.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Analyze financial results and provide insights to ownership and leadership.
- Develop meaningful reporting around margins, cost trends, inventory, and operational performance.
- Support decision-making through financial analysis and key performance indicators.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead the annual budgeting process and periodic forecasting activities.
- Monitor financial performance against budget and investigate variances.
- Develop forecasts to support growth initiatives and seasonal business cycles.
- Assist ownership with financial planning and profitability analysis.
Cash Flow & Working Capital Management
- Monitor cash flow and liquidity requirements.
- Manage working capital to support seasonal fluctuations and inventory demands.
- Develop strategies to optimize cash conversion and resource utilization.
Accounting Operations Leadership
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll support, and general accounting functions.
- Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and supporting schedules.
- Review reconciliations and monitor accounting controls.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance accounting efficiency and scalability.
Compliance, Risk Management & Internal Controls
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable accounting regulations.
- Establish and maintain effective internal controls and accounting procedures.
- Identify financial risks and implement mitigation strategies.
- Maintain documentation and processes necessary to support audits and regulatory requirements.
Audit & Tax Coordination
- Coordinate annual audits and work with external auditors.
- Partner with tax advisors to support tax planning and filings.
- Ensure timely preparation of schedules and supporting documentation.
- Assist with year-end reporting and compliance activities.
Inventory & Cost Management
- Oversee inventory accounting and controls to ensure accurate valuation and reporting.
- Monitor inventory levels and support efficient replenishment strategies.
- Analyze inventory trends, shrinkage, and operational costs.
- Develop reporting around cost of goods sold and margin performance.
- Collaborate with operations to improve inventory accuracy and minimize waste.
Team Leadership
- Provide leadership and mentorship to accounting staff.
- Establish processes that promote accountability, accuracy, and efficiency.
- Foster collaboration between accounting, operations, sales, and logistics teams.
- Participate in hiring, training, and staff development initiatives.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 7-10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
- Experience leading accounting operations and month-end close processes.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated leadership experience and ability to develop teams.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and accounting software.
Preferred
- Experience in agriculture, produce distribution, food logistics, or commodity-based businesses.
- Familiarity with inventory accounting, freight costs, and logistics documentation.
- Understanding of seasonal business cycles and variable pricing structures.
- Exposure to PACA or similar regulatory frameworks (a plus, not required).
- Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
Pay: $100,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
