Job Summary and Qualifications
I. Position Summary: The lactation consultant is a skilled member of the health care team who provides lactation consultation to patients via direct interactions and provides clinical support and care to all breastfeeding mothers. Promotes breastfeeding and assists with facilitating change within the clinical settings using evidence-based, practical, clinical management. The lactation consultant takes patient histories, performs breast and feeding evaluations, develops treatment plans, and makes appropriate referrals as indicated. Participates in the Mom Baby monthly staff Meetings. Works cohesively with NICU, Mom/Baby and Labor & Delivery staff to promote a consistent lactation program, both inpatient and outpatient services and ensure continuity of care for ongoing breastfeeding success. Job duties also may include but not be inclusive of: skin to skin, phone triage ~ lactation services, and assisting customers who attend the Baby on the Weigh Club.
II. Position Requirements:
A. Licensure/Certification/Registration: Current licensure in the State of Colorado as a Registered Nurse, or current active multistate Registered Nurse license. Lactation certification from an approved training program. CLC certified.
B. Education: Graduated from Nursing School. Lactation certification from an approved training program.
C. Experience: Must possess practical skills, clinical judgment and knowledge of the lactation field. Must have comprehensive practical experience working with breast feeding mothers and infants. One or more years of lactation, parent education experience.
D. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Must possess extensive practical skills, clinical judgment and knowledge of the lactation field. Strong background in adult education, interpersonal skills, health professional education, developing, implementing and monitoring teaching activities. Excellent physical assessment and interviewing skills required. Must have current knowledge of various interventions and equipment used in supporting breast feeding mothers and infants.
