Position OverviewNYC Health + Hospitals Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) and The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) launched a Psychiatric Physician Assistant (Psych PA) Fellowship Program to provide PAs with in-depth specialized training in psychiatric care, emphasizing comprehensive patient care for individuals with complex behavioral, social, and medical needs. The 12-month fellowship program combines clinical and didactic training to facilitate a successful career as a Psych PA in the public sector.
OMH is seeking up to 6 motivated Physician Assistants to join our
Psychiatric PA Fellowship, at one of OMH’s Psychiatric Centers located in New York City (Manhattan Psychiatric Center, South Beach Psychiatry Center, or Bronx Psychiatric Center). Fellows will deliver direct patient care and develop the clinical foundation necessary for a successful career in public psychiatry.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesReporting to a Psychiatrist or other designated clinician, the Psych PA Fellow will perform direct patient care as outlined in New York State Education Law. Duties may include:
- Elicit the chief complaint and conduct a thorough medical, neurological, psychiatric, and psychosocial evaluation
- Formulate a Differential Diagnosis and Clinical Formulation
- Formulate a Plan of Action that should include appropriate lab and neuroimaging, if indicated
- Evaluate all pertinent labs & diagnostic data
- Demonstrate clinical knowledge of the most common/prevalent psychiatric conditions and their management, including evaluation of high-risk patients
- Recommend appropriate medical and/or psychiatric therapeutic agent(s) and select between different psychosocial therapeutic modalities and interventions, including identifying and describing the following:
- Sleep disturbance and other neurovegetative signs/symptoms
- EPS, Acute Dystonic Reaction, Tardive Dyskinesia, NMS
- Discontinuation syndrome
- Sundowning syndrome
- Common medication side effects and management strategies
- Collaborate with social work to generate appropriate referrals, identify and help coordinate the community resources available in discharge planning, and assemble and provide patient education
- Other duties as appropriate
Alongside clinical responsibilities, fellows will be released to participate in a robust training program, including: virtual didactics and interactive workshops in behavioral health, access to an online psychopharmacology course with free CMEs, a dedicated mentor, and completion of a Capstone project.
Fellowship Structure, Titles & Minimum QualificationsGraduate Physician Assistant FellowTitle used prior to licensure: Compensation of $82,000- Must possess a New York State Limited Permit to practice as a PA under appropriate supervision (Title 8, Article 131-B, Section 6541).
- Must obtain full licensure within one year of appointment.
- Upon licensure, appointment transitions to “Physician Assistant.”
Physician Assistant FellowTitle used post-licensure: Compensation of $154,000- Must possess a New York State license and current registration to practice as a PA.
